Generic Drugs Vs Brand Name Drugs

Generic drugs vs. brand name drugs: we’ve all heard the discussions and the arguments about which one is better to buy. Obviously, in the battle of generic drugs vs. brand name drugs, the generic drugs have the overwhelming advantage and victory in terms of price. You would have to be crazy to choose brand name drugs over their generic counterparts…wouldn’t you?

Maybe not, many people say. For in the battle of generic drugs vs. brand name drugs, there is a prevailing idea that there must be something compromised in the generic drugs. They must be inferior, or not made quite properly. Perhaps they’re even dangerous. So we have to shell out the big bucks to make sure that we are getting the quality and the safety that we need in the medications. Right?

Let’s look more deeply into this matter of “generic drugs vs. brand name drugs”. We can get our true answers only by asking the right questions. The questions that we need to logically start with are: “Where do generic drugs come from in the first place?” and “Why do brand name drugs cost so much?” We should also probably ask “How can the makers of brand name drugs compete and stay in business when they are charging such high prices?”

Why Generic Drugs Cost So Much Money

When a pharmaceutical manufacturer puts a new drug on the market, that company has already spent obscene amounts of money. In fact, it costs a company an average of $800 million and three years’ time to develop just one new drug-and then, if the FDA shoots it down in the final stages of trials, that’s a terrible loss to the drug maker. Drug makers who introduce new drugs must recoup their costs for research and development, manufacture, marketing, and distribution of the drug. They can only do this through their prices.

In acknowledgment of these hard facts about what a drug maker goes through to introduce just one new drug, the government grants them temporary patent protection on each new drug that successfully passes the clinical trials for safety and effectiveness. This means that for a temporary period (typically 20 years dating from the time that the maker first started developing the drug), nobody else is permitted to make a generic or competing formulation of that drug, and the drug maker is allowed to keep its formula under lock and key. This is why these very expensive drugs can “compete”: their competition is temporarily gagged out of fairness to the original maker of the drugs.

Once the patent protection is nearing expiration, other drug makers start applying to be able to learn the formula and make an exact or nearly exact copy of the drug in question. These companies never had to do the research and development, scientific trials, or marketing for the drug-thus, they will be able to simply copy the drug and do some minimal marketing of it because it is already so familiar, having been around for about 20 years and already familiar to doctors, hospitals, and end users. Since their costs are so low, they can keep their prices low. Furthermore, once many competitors start making the same generic drug, its price will go down even more thanks to competition and wide availability.

So, What’s Wrong with the Generic Drugs?

In the generic drugs vs. brand name drugs duel, the argument in favor of continuing to buy the brand name drugs at the higher prices is simple: these generics must be compromised in quality and, perhaps, in safety. The generic makers may not be getting the original formula quite right. Or, they may be slipping in cheapened ingredients to help keep their costs low and their prices competitive. Well, time was that this was a pretty sound argument. The goods news for your wallet and bank account is that times have changed.

Our science, drug making technology, and regulatory efforts with drug making and marketing have all greatly advanced in the last 50 years. Generic drug makers cannot sell their drugs unless they correspond almost exactly with the originals because regulations prohibit them from doing so. The generic drugs must have the same active ingredient, in the same amount and with the same delivery mechanism into the bloodstream, as the brand name drugs that they correspond to. The only caution is that generic drugs may contain very slightly different inactive ingredients than the brand name counterparts, and this might cause allergic reactions in some people. Other than that, however, everything crucial about the drug must be same as the original-even the possible side effects! All generic drug forms must be proven 100% as safe as their brand name counterparts before they are allowed to be sold, too. But since the brand name drugs have been around for so long by the time their generic forms emerge, this is very easy to ensure.

When it comes to generic drugs vs. brand name drugs, therefore, it almost always is the better choice to spend far less money and get a generic form (if one exists, of course). There are occasional exceptions: for instance, diseases like cancer and many bacterial infections are unstable. That is, they are constantly changing and what worked on them 20 years ago might work so well now, so that a new brand name form of the old drug is now required in many people. But in the end, you can rest assured that the battle of generic drugs vs. brand name drugs is usually won by the generic counterparts.

    Methamphetamine Recovery

Yasmin’s fifth session came two days after a friend had stopped by to smoke tik (slang for methamphetamine in Cape Town). Yasmin had not been having constant cravings any more and had not wanted to seek out tik that weekend, but the friend smoking is usually a big one for most users, and Yasmin gave in.

I took Yasmin back to that day, and her craving was a 3 out of 10 in that situation. We tapped on all aspects until it became zero. Then we went back to father issues. Yasmin’s father is very domineering, and what came up for healing in this session was that he rejects Yasmin and her sibling, the two youngest who dared to not toe his line. Several aspects of this rejection came up, and we dealt with them as well as we could in this appointment.

At the end of the appointment, I gave Yasmin a sheet with a clear goal on it – to have 3 clear days without using. I asked her to place it where she could see it, and to put a tick in the appropriate box for every good day, and a cross for every bad day. This is the first time I have felt confident giving Yasmin this clearly-defined goal. And neither of us was disappointed.

Yasmin has successfully carried on avoiding this friend as much as possible, to give herself space to think more clearly without being influenced by others, and also as part of her decision to change her life and surround herself by people more helpful of her chosen new way of life. By the time I next saw Yasmin, she had managed three clear days! This is for the first time in about three years.

This is one of a series of articles written about the treatment of Yasmin, an ex-tik-addict-to-be in Cape Town, South Africa. The treatment is done mainly with EFT, otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT is a very flexible and versatile tool that can be used by anyone who works in the role of helping tik addicts in their recovery. It involves tapping with two fingers on special acupressure meridian points whilst repeating a releasing phrase. This combination of tapping and words helps us to let go of unwanted negative emotions and the associated behaviors. Without the negative emotions driving destructive behavior, there is no need for the bahavior any more, and the ex-addict-to-be can make a choice to be free.

With gratitude to Yasmin, who agreed for her story to be told, session by session.

    Drug Effectiveness Revealed

NNT means Number Needed to Treat. It is in that fine print sheet that comes with the drug your doctor prescribed and, if not, can be accessed on the manufacturer’s web site.

The doc said the stuff would treat the particular condition that the patient was complaining about. But will it help YOU? How effective is it for that particular problem?

Drug companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes millions, to develop a drug to alleviate certain symptoms.
I said treat, not cure. Pharmaceutical companies don’t want to cure; they want to treat so they can continue to sell their drugs. A cure would put them out of business. There are many cures for cancer, but none allowed in the U.S. A very damning statement that will not be pursued here.

NNT is the number of patients needed to be treated in order to prevent ONE additional bad outcome compared in a controlled clinical trial. The ideal NNT outcome of a trial is ONE where everyone improves from the drug. The higher the number the less effective is the drug.

Some of the trials may run for 5 years. The NNT can be time specific. The more people in the study adds to its validity as well as who does the study. It should be done by a group not connected to the manufacturing company. These facts cannot be determined by the general public. Two or more control tests by different groups is also advised.

If you have seen the movie “The Fugitive” it gives good idea why the manufacturer should not do the tests.

Some studies are done targeting a specific disease. During these the doctors sometimes find excellent side effects that the drug company can use. Viagra was found during a heart study. The higher the number the less effective the drug. Control studies of LIPITOR show it reduced the possibility of heart attack by ONE person in ONE HUNDRED.

The NNT for Lipitor is 100. Almost worthless. The true number according to Dr. Hoffman is closer to 250.

Drug companies are selling 99 or more useless prescriptions, but is does bring in a lot of money. Many doctors consider all statin drugs to be dangerous if taken for long periods of time.

How can anyone know if the drug they are taking is worthwhile? For those now taking any prescribed or even non-prescription medication it is a very good idea to go to the Internet and do a Google search. Type in the official name with the letters NNT and you can go one more step and search under “side effects”. Most people will be shocked at how dangerous what they are taking can be.

Get those bottles out now to start the Internet search to see if what is being taken is really any good for that condition.

    Are You Addicted to Drugs?

Are you a Drug addict? You may think I am talking about street drugs, I am not. How old are you? In one year I will turn fifty. When we were kids, there was not a bombardment of television advertising suggesting you take some pill for anything and everything. Pills that pep you up then shut you down. What about all the side effects from taking your drugs, medicines, or medications? Somehow this magic round thing is going to heal or cure some issue you have in your body. This must be true as that person in the white coat told you so. By God you trust them too.

One day as I headed for the aspirin an epiphany struck me. The reason my head hurt was likely NOT due to a deficiency of that brand of aspirin or Tylenol. Intuitively or instinctively I knew I had been had. Instead I drank water and called it good. That was the last time an aspirin passed my lips. That was in the mid 1980’s. As an insulin dependent diabetic I am supposed to be sick all the time, not heal quickly, and have not seen a Doctor for over 30 years and not taken one anti-biotic, drug, pill or anything all that time. Nor have I been ill either. Why is that?

Is your medicine cabinet full of prescriptions? If you have drugs you take, WHY? I get it that you felt something perhaps is wrong with you and logically you think a Doctor is who can help you. Just because a Medical Doctor said it is this or that does not mean it is true. Prove it. How many times have you been to the Doctors and they said to you, “try this”? Does that fall under the category of “practicing medicine”? What it truly is they just got a visit from a drug company rep and they are pushing samples out to innocent people like you, or maybe foolish that is.

In fact, please show this article to your doctor and have them prove to me one single drug of any kind and ever healed or cured anything. I invite any medical doctor onto my live call I host nightly to confront me directly. Please show up with lab reports and scientific medical proof that drugs can and do heal anything. Not treat things, not practice anything, either cure or heal is what we are after.

Do you like being swollen? Your pills have made into a new person. Larger, more toxic, and plenty bloated is likely the case. I bet you are scared to stop taking what is hurting you too. Think about this people, WAKE UP!

Here is a freebie. In our work, over 90% of alcoholics and drug addicts we found simply did not feel loved by their fathers. We were able to provide a solution for this condition.

There was a thing called nutrition we used to all have naturally because of nature. The government actually started paying farmers not to farm a long time ago. Genetically modified food growers now produce on large scales what used to be divided amongst American salt of the earth farmers. The consolidation of food production is now in the hands of the few. So are the profits. I get it, you are afraid to think for yourself and figure out what health and nutrition are all about. Besides, someone is paying for medical insurance and you have worked so hard you insist on getting your money’s worth right? At what cost will you do this? Maybe your life is the answer.

    How Do Antibiotics Work?

Antibiotics – a progress and a very important part in medicine. These medications are used to fight many infections caused by bacteria. The following facts about antibiotics will help you to understand how antibiotics works, the possible side effects and the importance of taking antibiotics as prescribed by the health care provider.

  • Antibiotics do not work against the whole Infections
  • Antibiotics works only against infections caused by bacteria. This medication is not generally effective against most infections. That is why your doctor will rarely prescribe an antibiotic if you have an infection.

Some of them are effective against only a certain type of bacteria, while others may deal effectively with a wide range of it. Bacterial infections include strep throat (not all) ear infection, bladder and lung infections. Not all bacterial infections require treatment with antibiotics. Based on your illness and symptoms (make laboratory tests if necessary), your doctor can prescribe the most appropriate antibiotic that will work best for you.

  • Antibiotics can cause side effects.
  • If your doctor prescribe an antibiotic, be sure to ask him or her what are the possible side effects. Antibiotics can cause nausea, diarrhea and stomach pain. Some people may experience an allergic reaction (characterized by rash and itching or in severe cases, difficulty breathing). If you experience any side effects when you take antibiotics, you should call your doctor.

  • Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics.
  • Overuse of antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance occurs when antibiotics no longer work against. Antibiotic resistance has been accelerated by extreme overuse of antibiotics in humans and animals.Taking antibiotics too frequently, for too long, or not completing the course of antibiotics will result in increased resistance of bacteria by different mechanisms.

  • It is very important to take antibiotics as it was prescribed.
  • Antibiotics should be taken only when it was prescribed by your doctor. Consult the hear care professional before taking any other medications because it may interact in a negative way and cause a worse effect for you.You should never take antibiotics given to you by somebody else or which were prescribed for a previous illness.
Below you will find three basic and important steps to ensure that your antibiotic treatment will be effective:

    1. Always take the prescribed dosage. The dosage is very important factor in treatment effectiveness. If the dosage is not adequate, it will not be effective in treating infections and bacteria and it is more likely to develop resistance because the bacteria continue to grow and develop ways to break the effects of the antibiotic.

    2. Take the full course as it was prescribed by the health care professional. Very often, when the patient feels better and it seems like the disease is gone, he stops to use them. However, even after symptoms are gone, the bacteria may still be present and the infection can return if the use of the medications is stopped. It may also promote resistance to them.

    3. Antibiotics should not be saved and reused. You should always take the full treatment, because none of the drug is necessary any more. However, if this happens, the drugs should not be taken to any other disease. Different types of infections requires different types of antibiotics, so taking theremaining treatments are not effective.

Always consult your doctor before taking any medications or before stopping to use the prescribed course in order to avoid any side effects caused by them or a worse result.

Medication Precautions For Back And Neck Pain Meds

In the U.S. Consultants generally prescribe prescription strength non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also known as NSAIDS. These drugs for back stiffness treatment include ingredients like aspirin, ibuprofen, and indomethacin. They also may prescribe corticosteroids, muscle relaxers, analgesics, and antidepressants. The medical community has become much more nervous about their use over the last ten years thanks to the side effects.

NSAIDS often work quickly to give some relief for back pain by reducing redness and swelling as well as being general analgesic treatments. But at the very least they can cause stomach irritation over a few day’s use. Under extended heavy use they may lead to ulcers, stomach bleeding and other stomach issues. Over the counter doses are typically easy to take with the prescription variety potentially devastating under the wrong conditions.

For many people muscle relaxants cause sleepiness but are no better than NSAIDS in relieving back trouble. Opioid analgesics such as morphine and other synthetic drugs are often prescribed for especially stubborn pain. And while these kind of drugs effectively mask pain they do zilch to really bring healing to the affected area. The side-effects of these drugs can be severe including sleepiness, revulsion, diminished vision, bowel obstruction, lightheadedness, among others. And antidepressants are intriguingly sometimes prescribed for back pain under the belief that the effect of them relieve strain and that they have some precise agony relieving abilities.

Drugs most commonly used in serious muscle, joint and nerve discomfort are corticosteroids. These are given either orally or intramuscularly ( injected ) directly into inflamed areas of muscles and joints. These drugs often cause major and lasting side-effects. Among them are:
-Since they suppress inflamation, they really stop exact healing in several cases
-These drugs have a negative effect the formation of collagen, causing progressive and accelerated joint degradation with long term use.
-They may result in changes to the skin, including dermatitis and harsh acne.
-They may result in changes to the nervous system leading to crazy changes of varying degrees.
-Changes in metabolism that may include a decrease in metabolism causing fat deposits in places of the face and neck that could be disfiguring.

Drugs for back trouble not only cause stand alone side effects to our bodies, but can also meddle with other drugs and supplements. Negative ineractions with over the counter drugs could cause devastating side effects, including death if the wrong drugs are utilized in large enough doses or if they meddle or react to one another adversely. Compound side effects are the most common negative reactions to prescribed pharmaceuticals when used in conjunction with over the counter drugs.

Most drugs for back stiffness treatment can be used on a stand alone basis without Problems developing. Plenty of the drugs reduce swelling and mask agony. They can be valuable in alleviating many kinds of back trouble temporarily. Before beginning any round of prescription pharmaceuticals of any kind, thoroughly inform your doctor of any and all drugs or supplements you are taking. Being sure the drugs are used in a centered demeanour, temporarily, without any other mix of drugs will make them have the most positive and safest effect practicable.

    Antibiotics for Strep Throat

If you have a case of strep throat, most likely you will see the doctor for some kind of treatment or therapy. Once the doctor makes the diagnosis of strep throat, he or she will have three major goals in mind: The first is to control your fever. The second is to control your pain. The third is to control the infection and kill off the bacteria. This can be accomplished with the following treatments.

The doctor can recommend antipyretics for the fever. These can include ibuprofen, in the form of Motrin® or Advil®. It can also include Tylenol or acetaminophen and naproxen or Aleve®. Such medications bring down the high fever that is such a common symptom of strep and will help you feel better relatively quickly.

Such antipyretic (acetaminophen, naproxen and ibuprofen) also work for pain. You can sometimes take acetaminophen along with either naproxen or ibuprofen to get a double dose of a painkiller. Otherwise, the doctor can order a narcotic pain reliever if the pain is really bad. This can include Darvocet N-100 or medications like Tylenol-3 or Vicodin. Remember that these medications contain Tylenol in them and should never be taken along with over the counter Tylenol. This would result in an unhealthy overdose of Tylenol which can do a great deal of liver damage and can be lethal.

Doctors use a variety of antibiotics in order to treat the strep throat and to make it go away for good. The most common antibiotic used for strep throat in the past was penicillin. Then some strep infections became resistant to penicillin and doctors have used it less and less over the course of time. Antibiotic resistance is common in strep throat infections so doctors keep having to change antibiotics to something the strep throat bacteria aren’t as resistant to.

In place of penicillin, many doctors use cephalosporin antibiotics such a Ceclor® (cefaclor), Keflex (cephalexin) or Ceftin. These are antibiotics that are distantly related to penicillin but have a much less chance of strep throat resistance.

Other choices for doctor’s antibiotics for strep throat include erythromycin-based antibiotics. This can include erythromycin itself or Zithromax (azythromycin). Zithromax is a good choice because it only has to be taken for 5-6 days and it lasts for a long time in the body. Other antibiotics require a ten day course of antibiotics.

It is a good idea to take the whole prescription your doctor gives you. This is because of the resistance problem we talked about. If you only take the prescription until you feel better, you only get rid of the most sensitive bacteria. This leaves the most resistant and dangerous bacteria left and you wind up with an infection with strep that is even harder to kill off. If you take the whole prescription, you are killing off the entire infection and you won’t likely get it back. The only people that get recurrent antibiotic-resistant strep throat are those that have large and convoluted tonsils that harbor bacteria and keep the antibiotic from working effectively.
