Lexapro: A Well Tolerated Antidepressant

Lexapro (Escitalopram) is an antidepressant introduced by Lundbeck based on one of their earlier drugs known as citalopram and marketed as Celexa. Lexapro is an antidepressant of the class SSRI. Lexapro is the second most popular antidepressant in the United States. It is noted for its great tolerabilility, that many people use the drug with very few side effects. However, Lexapro, like other SSRI antidepressants, can totally kill libido and result in massive weight gain.

There was a great deal of controversy surrounding Lexapro’s release, as the drug is very similar to Lundbeck’s previous antidepressant Celexa, and the release of Lexapro coincided with the expiry of Celexa’s patent. Lundbeck claims that Lexapro is better than Celexa, and that it is better tolerated by patients, but it seems that the drugs are very similar in how they act and the side effects that they cause. Lexapro, chemically, is a stripped down Celexa. Lundbeck retained the active portions of Celexa while removing the inaction portions. This resulted in a different chemical composition, but the two drugs are very similar in their pharmacological effects. In fact, if you had an allergic reaction to Celexa, you should not take Lexapro, as it is likely that you will have an allergic reaction to Lexapro as well.

Most users of Lexapro report typical SSRI side effects, such as headache, insomnia, dry mouth, and nausea, most of which are reported when users first start taking the drug and subside within a month. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Lexapro has a large incidence of causing weight gain in its users, and the majority of users will experience a reduced libido. If side effects persist for longer a month, or are too bothersome for you to keep taking Lexapro, you should talk to a doctor to see about switching to another antidepressant. Suddenly stopping your use of Lexapro can result in severe withdrawal symptoms associated with SSRI antidepressants. Lexapro is particularly known for being well tolerated and thus does not often cause severe withdrawal that other SSRI antidepresants can, but the risk still exists. Some people report feelings of worthlessness or inability to sleep when trying to come off of Lexapro. Other symptoms include sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds, sweating, hot flashes or chills, or inability to concentrate. Although these severe withdrawal symptoms only affect a small portion of Lexapro users, you should talk to your doctor if you are concerned about them. Your doctor can help prevent withdrawal symptoms by gradually stepping down your dosage of Lexapro.

Lexapro is a safe and well tolerated SSRI antidepressant that is very popular in the United States. Although some users will experience side effects or severe withdrawal, the incidence of these are lower than with other SSRI antidepressants, and so Lexapro is a good choice for those wanting a safe and effective choice for combating their clinical depression. Keep in mind that Lexapro is very similar to Celexa (citalopram) and if you experienced difficulty taking Celexa you most likely will not find success with Lexapro. In addition, generic citalopram (Celexa) is available, while generic escitalopram (Lexapro) is not available, meaning that citalopram can be purchased for less than escitalopram. If finances are a concern, you may wish to consider using citalopram instead of escitalopram.

Lexapro – A Medicine That Helps Control Depression

Lexapro is widely regarded as the most effective and well-tolerated prescription medication that plays a significant part in improving the quality and enjoyment of life for adults who are living with depression.

As you already know, depression is a deadly disorder that affects millions of Americans each year. It arises because of imbalance of few chemicals in the brain. These chemicals are known as neurotransmitters.

Symptoms of anxiety are normally linked with depression. If you are suffering from depression not only you will be fearful of certain situations but physical symptoms such as tension, sweating, or increased pulse rate would also make their presence felt.

Coming to Lexapro, it is a member of the group of prescription drugs known as selective serotonin in medical parlance. According to one study, Lexapro has been prescribed to over 15 million patients in the United States. By the way, Lexapro is the fastest-growing medicine of its kind. The best part about Lexapro is that if you take just one 10 mg tablet a day, it can tremendously improves the symptoms of depression and anxiety for lots of patients in the initial week. What’s more, despite being a powerful medicine, Lexapro is well tolerated.

According to study, which was implemented on patients who were taking 10-mg a day of Lexapro, lots of people were of the opinion that not only there is improvement in terms of symptom control but also there is no side effect to be worried of. You may ask: Why Lexapro is so effective? Fact remains that Lexapro clicks because it restore the brain’s chemical balance, which in turn leads to increase in the supply of serotonin. Talking about serotonin, it is a substance that resides in the brain and has a significant bearing in influencing mood.

You can take Lexapro daily along with wide array of other medicines. But before that it is recommended that you consult your doctor and clearly tell them what prescription medicines or as a matter of fact over-the-counter remedies you take on a regular basis. As already mentioned, Lexapro is well tolerated. Side effects are also minimal and with the passage of time and continued treatment it goes away.

The most common side effects associated with Lexapro is nausea, insomnia, ejaculation disorder, somnolence, increased sweating, fatigue, anorgasmia and decreased libido.

There is no hiding the fact that Lexapro has proved to be an effective treatment for depression. Lots of controlled studies are of the view that Lexapro play a pivotal part in improving the symptoms of depression. It just takes around 15 days for Lexapro to start making its presence felt. According to recent controlled study, it has come into notice that the control group may get no treatment, standard treatment, or placebo of major depressive disorder. This can be termed as a physician’s definition for a specific kind of depression.

It is worthwhile remembering that a person who suffers from a major depressive disorder must have either a depressed mood or in some cases a complete loss of interest in daily routines. It is very important that the person must have these kinds of symptoms regularly for at least 15 days.

Apart from that, this sort of mood must demonstrate a modification from the person’s normal mood.
In addition, it should also be having a negative impact on his or her daily routines such as in work place, family function and of course in attitude. Point to be noted here is that a depressed mood which has occurred because of drugs and alcohol, is not considered a major depressive disorder in the medical fraternity. But one thing is for sure; only a certified doctor can handle this or any other kind of disorder.

Lexapro can turn out to be very useful in patients who’ve previously used other depression medicines. As you already know, effects of medicines vary from person to person. Therefore, a medicine, which can be a boon for one individual, can have serious repercussion for other individual.

Taking this into account, it is not that surprising for doctors to advice patients to change medicines so that you can get better relief from symptoms. For example, in one study of patients with depression, patients who begin treatment with Celexa, Paxil and Prozac did not react properly to the treatment were switched to Lexapro. And they started feeling at ease after the switch. But that does not mean you stop taking dosage of medicine, continue your treatment as long as your doctor wants.

Antidepressants and High Blood Pressure

Some of your medications may be affecting others. This is important to understand, as the effects of taking multiple medicines may be very harmful or even deadly.

Depression is a very common condition, especially in teens and older adults. It affects millions of lives every day, and medications that help with depression are among the most highly prescribed medications in America. Unfortunately, so are high blood pressure medications. While it is understandable that both conditions must be treated, at times depression medication may interfere with high blood pressure medicine.

Depression is a condition that, though mental, has serious causes as well as effects outside the mind. Depression is sometimes caused by an imbalance of serotonin and dopamine, and chemical drugs are often prescribed that attempt to correct this imbalance. Unfortunately, serotonin and dopamine affect more than just your mind, and are chemicals needed to complete a variety of functions within the body. One of these functions is that of preventing heart disease by preventing atherosclerosis. If the depression medication does not adequately correct the imbalance, and perhaps puts the serotonin levels lower than they should be, the result will be increased risk of heart disease, including atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.

Dopamine, in addition, is used in cases of a severe drop in blood pressure, and works to raise blood pressure to prevent shock. If a patient has high blood pressure, however, and is on antidepressants which include dopamine, the antidepressant just well may be raising blood pressure, working against blood pressure medication.

That is not to say that antidepressant medications should be avoided at all costs if you do have high blood pressure. Rather, you would do well to research and find acceptable ways of controlling both the depression and high blood pressure through other means. All of those chemicals can not be good for you, anyway.

But how would you treat both depression and high blood pressure homeopathically? First of all, a change in lifestyle as well as in diet is necessary. Higher fat meats and other foods should be avoided, and replaced with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water is a must, and avoid prepackaged foods, opting instead for fresh foods is best.

That will begin the treatment process, but, though good nutrition will help depression, depression may still exist. It is best to also consider counseling, as talking to someone may reduce stress in your life. Talking to a counselor seems awful-as if you “need help.” But truly, getting a few things of your chest every once in a while probably also seems like a great idea. Talking out problems with either a trusted friend or a counselor can be a significant stress relief, and in turn, will lower blood pressure as well.

Because the brain is an organ, it requires proper nutrition to function correctly. If you are not eating right, your brain may be deficient in vitamins and minerals, which will cause it to send improper signals to the body, including those signals which control emotions. Sometimes, but not always, a change in eating habits may relieve many symptoms and feelings of depression even without the use of antidepressant drugs.

Choosing a healthy lifestyle is a great choice for every aspect of your body’s health, but it still may not be enough. You will need to speak with a doctor to determine if medication is necessary, and if it is, which would be the best medication for you.

A Few Natural Antidepressants

In a world of prescription drugs and powerful medication, are there really natural antidepressants out there that are strong enough to do any good in the battle against depression? According to many, the answer is yes. The brain is incredibly complex, having to operate and control all the other systems and parts of the body. Sometimes being deficient in a single chemical out of hundreds can bring about the onset of depression. And after the onset comes on, a downward spiral can easily follow it. More and more, research is showing that much of the chemical imbalances in the body are caused by poor eating and exercise habits. This is difficult in the case of depression because depression often causes poor eating habits and lack of exercise in people who suffer from it. So if those are the very things that can cause it to come about, it’s easy to see how a vicious cycle can ensue. So what are some natural antidepressants, and how do they work?

1) Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. In many other articles, I’ve written extensively on Omega 3 EFAs. They’re absolutely essential to proper brain function because the working surface of the brain and gray matter are made up of Omega 3 EFAs. Another very important piece of information is that Omega 3 EFAs are increasingly being diminished in the normal food supply due to some specific corporate farming methods that are increasing the supply of Omega 6 EFAs and diminishing the supply of Omega 3s.

But getting more specific about Omega 3s as natural antidepressants. According to Joseph Hibbeln MD, author of a few compelling studies on fish consumption linked to depression, “In the last century, [Western] diets have radically changed and we eat grossly fewer omega-3 fatty acids now. We also know that rates of depression have radically increased by perhaps a hundred-fold.” In clinical studies, the Omega 3 component DHA was shown to be directly helpful in battling chronic depression.

2) Balanced Diet Full of Amino Acids. Most commonly caused by an unbalanced diet lacking in amino acids, many people suffer from what’s known as Neurotransmitter Deficiency Disorder. This ailment can cause a number of conditions such as depression, fatigue, obesity and more. The basic idea is this. The body needs amino acids in great supply. In fact there are over 20 amino acids that the body needs, 8 of which it can’t make on its own. Amino acids are what makes proteins, and proteins are much more than just muscle tissue. Most hormones and enzymes are proteins, and so are most neurotransmitters used in the brain. A diet deficient in amino acids can quickly make a person feel very lousy. A variety of essential bodily chemicals slowly start to decrease in production, and through that, the overall metabolism begins to slow down, often causing a person to feel fatigue.

The problem with many depression drugs is that they can actually deplete levels of neurotransmitters over time. Drugs known as Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI) including Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, Celexa, and Wellbutrin work by artificially boosting serotonin allowing for a temporary benefit to the chemical messaging system. These drugs however, don’t cause a production of more serotonin in the body, and over time can actually cause serotonin levels to deplete because of a few specific factors. So if you’re not providing the body with the building blocks, or amino acids, that it needs in order to build neurotransmitters, you might not ever see a permanent positive change.

3) Brain Stimulating Natural Supplements. There are a host of good natural supplements available that aid in the production and release of neurotransmitters and other essential chemicals that the brain relies on. Many of the compounds found in brain stimulating natural supplements are actually specific amino acids, which you learned about in the above point. When brain chemistry isn’t at 100%, you can’t just take a supplement that will fill in the gap like you would if you had a vitamin C deficiency. Instead, supplements are available that provide the basic essentials, or building blocks, for the body to produce brain chemicals, things like hormones and neurotransmitters.

4) Exercise. I know that it sounds like I’m preaching a tired old message, diet and exercise. But that’s only because it’s true. A proper diet and regular exercise will do wonders for the body. We’ve already covered diet. Exercise has been linked to brain chemistry because exercise causes the body to release serotonin, thereby causing a person to feel content, happy, and energetic. I’ve noticed this phenomenon myself, being a person who exercises routinely. After a good workout, I feel a boost in vitality and spirits. Many others have reported the exact same thing.
